Turin, Italy – On 20th November, Tierra took part at the Webinar on the digitization of Construction equipmentAttrezzature e digitale: quali evoluzioni in operaorganized by Assimpredil Ance (Association of Construction companies in Milan, Lodi and Monza & Brianza), represented by Claudio Mirarchi, in collaboration with Unacea (Italian Construction Equipment Association), represented by Michela Magnanimo.

The event illustrated the digital technologies available today to companies in the world of Construction machinery and equipment, and explored the existing solutions, analyzing the possible impacts on the companies’ organization in terms of resource management and production performance. The panel was very rich and involved different actors of the Construction Industry, active locally and globally: CGT, Cobo Group, Imer Group, Komatsu, Messersì and Soilmec.

Tierra’s intervention focused on the major significance of Data Analytics applied in particular to crisis situations such as the current Covid-19 global pandemic, stressing on the importance of being able to draw the right, useful information from any data, to make the most of these abundant and precious resources. By now, these methods are crucial to enable a proactive organization and management of a company, by means of accurate, predictive analyses.

In support of this theory, a series of use cases was presented, based on different approaches in analyzing the same available data. One case in particular showed how machine utilization changed very significantly during the first lockdown period experienced in Italy on last March and April. The interesting point to analyze was that the data on machines daily usage provided two opposite results. The answer was in the nature of the job sites: the ones managed by the Public Administration had to finish the work as soon as possible before being able to close, while private job sites had to close almost immediately.

Data will be increasingly numerous and various in the next future as connected earth-moving machines are predicted to reach at least 300,000 units in 2028. The global “Construction Equipment Telematics” market valued at $928.4 million in 2018 is expected to reach $1.48 billion by 2029 at a CAGR of 4.62% during the forecast period 2019-2029.

Tierra believes greatly in Data Analytics and has been investing in various successful R&D projects around Machine Learning and IoT, carried out in partnership with Politecnico di Torino, in particular the SmartData Center.

“There is no such thing as uninteresting or irrelevant data: any data, if analyzed with the right mindset and under the right perspectives can provide meaningful, useful insights. A quote by the British Economist Ronald Coase expresses accurately the philosophy we adopt in dealing with the enormous quantity of data at our disposal: ‘If you torture the data long enough, it will confess’.”
